With around 130 exhibits created by inmates from prisons, young offenders institutions and secure hospitals across the UK, the Art by Offenders exhibition is a unique and intriguing show. Taking place at the Southbank Centre until early December, this unusual exhibition is attracting plenty of attention from art lovers around London.

Art by offenders, selected by prisoners
The Art by Offenders exhibition is curated from a selection of works entered for the annual Koestler Trust prize which promotes creativity across the criminal justice system. 5,867 pieces of art were entered into the 2009 awards, with prizes awarded in 52 separate categories, so you can be sure it brings in just as many entries this year.

2011 exhibition
All the curators for this year's Art by Offenders exhibition are volunteers from the magistrates association, whose selection gives the 2011 show a distinctive mix of judgement, art and crime. Presenting the art of offenders by those that sentence them, brings yet another fresh perspective to this annually groundbreaking exhibition.

A selection of art
A hugely varied selection of artwork is on show at the Art by Offenders exhibition at Southbank Centre for 2011. Alongside paintings and drawings, sculpture, and textiles, you can see ceramic work, film, music and writing too. With a chance to vote for you favourite and fill out comments cards for the works on show, this is your chance to speak directly to the artists who made the pieces.

Up for sale
All artwork included in the exhibition is up for sale at the end of the show, with proceeds being spilt between the artist and the Koestler Trust. 25 percent of the funds will go to the charity Victim Support, which provides support for people affected by crime in the UK.

Events
A variety of events accompany the Art by Offenders exhibition including a one off live performance piece from Jean Abreau Dance and 65daysofstatic. From poetry to theatre, discussion groups as well as a chance to meet the artists and curators in person, there is plenty going on to inspire and excite those with a passion for art.

The Art by Offenders exhibition takes place from 10am - 11pm, Wednesday 21st September - Sunday 20th November 2011 at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre.
