Taking place as part of the Festival of Britain anniversary celebrations, the art installations on South Bank are the creations of various different well known artists and celebrities.
Festival of Britain art installations
Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Southbank Centre's original Festival of Britain, the art installations on South Bank bring cutting edge design, creative architecture and contemporary art onto the streets for the duration of the summer. Even if you haven't got time to attend the other special events and exhibitions taking place as part of the festival, you can still catch a glimpse of the large structures as you hurry about town, so there's simply no excuse not to inject a bit of out of the ordinary arts and culture into your day.
Landscapes
Making up the majority of the unusual art installations on South Bank, are a series of differently themed landscapes. Inspired by the original Festival held in 1951, the works take on the themesof landscape, wildlife and British history, with art on display all along the South Bank, taking in the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and many smaller venues.
British influences
Included in the festival are works such as Black Pig Lodge, by Heather and Ivan Morison, which is made from Welsh coal; an installation created in collaboration with Gitta Gschwendtner and 50 young refugees, which pay homage to the ceramic doves of an original 1951 Lion and Unicorn Pavillio. Other art installations on South Bank are the dry stone walls made by Ben Kelly and a soundscape created from British wildlife recordings by Marcus Coates and Geoff Sample.
Urban Fox
One of the most installations on show at the Southbank Centre during Festival will no doubt be the giant urban fox. Created from straw bales, the urban fox sculpture faces towards Waterloo Bridge and represents the blend of country and city that can be found in London. Joining the fox on his urban retreat is also the Mobile Gull Appreciation Unit which will play host to various different seabird conservation societies, while it is on loan from the Folkestone Triennial.
Beach Huts
And for those that crave a little sun and sand over the summer, another seaside inspired installation comes to the South Bank in the form of an urban beach. Accompanying the 48 tonnes of sand creating the beach landscape are a series of 14 beach huts, all of which have been designed by special guests. Created by the likes of Phil Jupitus, Lemn Sissay, Grenville Davey and Tim Hunkin, you will feel like you're having a day trip to the seaside simply by popping down to the Southbank Centre.
