The Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition takes place once again at the National Maritime Museum Royal Observatory with over 400 entries in its second year, as back garden enthusiasts rub photographic shoulders with professional photographers in celebrating the night sky on film.
Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition
Having only been up and running for three years, this unusual photography exhibition is beginning to take its place next to the likes of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year and the Photographic Portrait Prize, both of which are open to amateurs and professionals on an even playing field. Capturing both nearby earthly skies and long distant galaxies and planets, this exhibition is a must see for anyone with a passion for studying space and stars.
Prizes and categories
Mixing up the themes of the entries for the Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition means that visitors will be treated to a vast array of different subject matter. The different categories include Earth and Space, Our Solar System and Deep Space, meaning shots can include both humans, earth based landscapes and deep space phenomena, all of which can be equally stunning in the context of astronomical photography. The last category is for under 16s, and gives budding photographers the chance to get their pictures of moons, stars and planets noticed too.
Winning entries
With the winning entry, Jupiter with Io and Ganymede taken by Damian Peach, gaining its owner a £1,000 prize, the competition is just as fierce as last year. But it's not just about the overall winner, each category on show in the Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition wins £250 each, and there are runner up prizes and highly commended places too. So make sure you check out all the different winners to see who to keep an eye out for the in the future.
Exhibition highlights
With such varied subject matter as a shaft of zodiacal light on farm in America, the Shell Galaxies taken from Italy, the Lunar Eclipse as captured in India, or a Galactic Paradise as seen from Turkey, visitors to the 2011 Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition are sure to be stunned by the amazing shots on view. Taken from places as diverse as China, Russia, the Philipines and the UK, the star of the show is very much of the beautiful night sky and all it's interplanetary inhabitants.
The Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition takes place from 10am - 5pm, Friday 9th September 2011 - Sunday 12th February 2012 at the National Maritime Museum Royal Observatory. Entrance is free.
