The At Home in Japan exhibition takes place at Geffrye Museum this year and attempts to get to the truth of the myth that Japanese homes are special, stylish and devoid of personal objects.
At Home in Japan exhibition
Questioning the stereotype of the minimal Japanese house, the exhibition goes behind the doors of several real homes in contemporary Japan to examine the layout, the decor and the different functions involved in domestic dwellings. Attempting to dispell the myth of the iconic status of its simple architecture, the Geffrye Museum invite you into their very own Japanese apartment to experience the ways in which Western and Eastern ideologies compare and contrast.
Japanese culture
Defining how private Japanese lives are lived, the At Home in Japan exhibition takes you on a journey through the different aspects of home, which revolve around several core areas of life. From decoration, display, furniture and the tatami mat, to eating, sleeping, cleaning, hygiene, gifting and worshipping, each area is covered by a different room, or through specific layout or design, and by entering the exhibition, visitors will be able to gain insight into what it feels like to live in urban contemporary Japan.
Welcome in
Stepping into the interior of a modern day urban Japanese home, visitors are able to touch, see and interact with the decor in a variety of different rooms. Taking in the entrance hall, a Western style room, the bathroom and the living-dining-kitchen, the At Home in Japan exhibition explores both the private and the communal living space and the possessions which would expected to fill it. Giving you the chance to experience another culture on a very personal level, the exhibition also invites you to look at Japanese art, design, architecture and interior decor in a less exotic, more empathetic light.
The At Home in Japan exhibition takes place from Tuesday 22nd March - Monday 29th August 2011 at Geffrye Museum. Standard adult admission is £5.00, with concessions available for £3.00. Kids under 16 go free.
Given the recent disasters in Japan, the Geffrye Museum has decided to support the Red Cross appeal. Visitors wishing to make a donation can do so at the front desk.
