A fantastic aviary art installation at The Curve takes place during spring 2010 as the French artist Celeste Boursier Mougenot takes over the Barbican space.
Aviary art installation at The Curve
Part of the EAST festival taking over several venues in London, the walk through avairy art installation at The Curve is an unusual exhibition that invites you to see and hear birds as they create music in front of your eyes. Constructed from musical instruments and 40 zebra finches, this is the only live art installation of its kind on show at the moment.
Musical birds
Presenting his first ever solo show in the UK, Celeste Boursier Mougenot has created an interactive musical landscape for the tiny birds in the centre of the Barbican's art space. The aviary art installation at The Curve invites visitors to walk through the space and listen as the birds go about their everyday lives and interacting by chance with the guitars and cymbals that are set up there.
Sound installation
As the birds peck at the cymbals and strings, or take food and water from the instruments that have been set up as feeders, they create an improvised composition of music which is then amplified throughout the gallery. As you walk through the avairy art installation at The Curve, you will be able to hear the birds as they create their sound installation and watch them alighting on the bass and electric guitars.
Electric art
Sure to be one of the most fascinating exhibitions to take place at the Barbican this year, fans of sound art and live performance should not miss this unusual and unique art installation. Accompanying the music created by the birds in the aviary art installation at The Curve are videos of hands playing guitars, which rather than producing the musical sound, simply put out an electric done which is the amplified sound of the video signal.
Celeste Boursier Mougenot
The French artist behind the aviary art installation at The Curve is renowned for his unusual artworks and has created many different sound pieces in the past. He has used such objects as surveillance cameras, vacuum cleaners and harmonicas to create peculiar audio and visual artworks. So if you like the sound of 40 birds playing Gibson Les Paul guitars, then this is the exhibition for you.
The aviary art installation at The Curve, Barbican, takes place from 11am - 8pm, Saturday 27th February - Sunday 23rd May 2010. Entrance is free.
