Exploring the life and times of the legendary ruler Moctezuma and his lasting legacy, the Aztec exhibition London event at the British Museum features precious artifacts from collections from Mexico and around the world.

Aztec exhibition London
Focusing on both the biographical details of Emperor Moctezuma II and his influence on modern Mexico, the Aztec exhibition London event also looks at the ruler's semi-mythological profile. The last in a series of shows at the famous museum that have explored the themes of power and empire, Moctezuma: Aztec Ruler follows exhibitions that have looked at the Babylonian Empire and the royal court of Jodhpur.

Emperor Moctezuma
In part a biographical study of the last elected ruler of the Aztecs, Moctezuma II, the Aztec exhibition London event follows the emperor's reign, from 1502 - 1520. While he was renowned in his day for his military prowess and semi-divine persona, Moctezuma is seen in a tragic light today as it was under his rule that the Aztec Empire fell to the Spanish.

Exhibition highlights
Notable artifacts in the exhibition include a turquoise mosaic mask of Aztec or Mixtec origin from the British Museum's own collection, pictured, which dates from 1400 - 1521. Other historical and artistic artifacts include a series of colonial paintings depicting the Spanish Conquest, architectural fragments from the emperor's palace, ceremonial weapons, a large stone altar and a stone box that once belonged to Moctezuma that bears his name-glyph.
