A Bali exhibition at Horniman Museum takes place this year as the museum explores a culture that is synonymous with dance. Entitled Bali - Dancing for the Gods, the exhibition looks at both secular and spiritual dancing in Bali, and showcases a variety of objects and artefacts from both the 1930s and contemporary culture.

Included in Bali - Dancing for the Gods are a selection of items that demonstrate the foundations of Balinese culture. Collated from a historical treasure trove collected by Bloomsbury Group scholar Beryl de Zoete and artist Walter Spies, you can see displays of a variety of different instruments, costumes and crafts on show.
Balinese traditions
Alongside a full Gamelan orchestra, a life sized funeral bull and various textiles and sculptures, all of which are associated with dance and performance in Bali, visitors can get to grips with various different Balinese legends that form the basis of stories and dances. The fearsome widow Rangda and the guardian spirit Barong are often represented in dance, with the performers wearing masks and costumes. At the Bali exhibition at Horniman Museum visitors can see real masks, costumes and other dance textiles on display.
Sacred and secular
A key part of Balinese culture is the culture mix of the sacred and the secular. Explaining the social structure, the place of temples and priests in society and the tension between the modern and traditional world, the Bali exhibition at Horniman Museum invites you to immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of this Indonesian island.
Bali - Dancing for the Gods, the Bali exhibition at Horniman Museum takes place from Saturday 16th April 2011 - Sunday 8th January 2012.
