Although he might protest the fact, Banksy is firmly entrenched in the London art world. His graffiti art inspired paintings sell for hundreds of thousands of pounds to celebrities, art dealers and anyone else who can afford to buy them, and yet no one even knows what he looks like. See for yourself what all the fuss is about at a Banksy art exhibition at The Flower Cellars, which is showing work from the last eight years.
Art on view
Although many of the works by Banksy being shown at The Flower Cellars aren’t new, there’s plenty of fresh and exciting work on show. At the show you can view rare and original Banksy works including plenty of architectural pieces. Ranging from urban graffiti art scrawled on the sides of buildings to paintings of his signature rats, Banksy's work has become iconic of contemporary urban art, and previous exhibitions of his art at galleries including the Andipa Gallery have been incredibly popular.
Art for sale
Unlike some Banksy art exhibitions, the catalogue is for sale. With the art on show produced in the same spirit and style as the kind you might see on the street, The Flower Cellars has been transformed into a gallery to highlight the depth and diversity of the artist's work, and as such maintaining the belief that street art should remain available for public viewing. With pieces from the past eight years on show, you can take a rare opportunity to see studio works with an authentic urban street art feel together in one location. And if you fancy taking one of them home, you'll need wads of cash as these Banksy's can go for serious amounts of money.
Under the hammer
Although these amazing Banksy pieces are selling from the gallery, fans of the notorious street artist will know that the artists work might be a little out of their league price wise. The Banksy Bonhams auction on the 5th February 2008 was a world first, as the urban art auction saw Banksy's famous Kate Moss portraits go under the hammer for an amazing £96,000 and in 2007 Space Girl and Bird sold from the auction house for £280,000. But if all that sounds like far too much cash to splash, Banksy art fans will still be able to get their hands on the exhibition catalogue from The Flower Cellars gallery to keep as a momento.
The mysterious Banksy
While he’s done a pretty good job on keeping himself unrecognisable, the public still knows a thing or two about the mysterious artist. Assumed to be in his late 20s, Banksy grew up in Bristol and started spraying graffiti in his early teens. His work – no matter how offensive – is always treated like high art.
Banksy art exhibition at The Flower Cellars Gallery
There is no one centrepiece for the latest Banksy exhibition at The Flower Cellars Gallery. Instead, the focus will be on several architectural pieces that proves when it comes to Banksy no obstacle is too large to overcome. In fact, Banksy's popularity is such that people have even chipped away at walls to preserve his work.
The Banksy art exhibition is on view at The Flower Cellars Gallery from 15th July - 25th July 2009. It is closed all day on 19th July 2009. Nearest tube: Covent Garden.
Admission is free. Gallery hours are 10am - 8pm but be prepared to queue. For more information call 020 7836 9136.
