The Barclaycard World Freerunning Championships take place on Saturday 15th August and are sure to be one of the hottest urban sports events of the autumn calendar. With 27 of the best freerunners from all over the world taking part, the World Freerunning Championships are set to be a hard fought contest with plenty of amazing moves.

Celebration of parkour
Freerunning has been around for some time, but has only really hit the mainstream within the last couple of years. Originally from France, where it's called parcours or parkour, freerunning has now reached the heady heights of having its very own Barclaycard World Freerunning Championships, where the best of the best compete for the title.

Top urban sport
Based on the principle of getting around the urban streets in the straightest and most smooth fashion, freerunning sees all kinds of unusual and athletic manouevres combined to create an efficient and unrestricted path for the runner across walls, benches, railings and anything else that might prove an unavoidable block to your average pedestrian. Supremely elegant and requiring serious skill, freerunning is a truly urban sport, inspired by the urban environment and landscape.

Global competition
Celebrating the art of parkours and the artistry of some of the world's best freerunners, the Barclaycard World Freerunning Championships is a chance to see these urban masters at work. All of the athletes taking part in the championships are required to perform their best moves to the accompaniment of their own soundtrack, to show off their twists, turns and leaps to their best advantage.

Judging criteria
The judges in the Barclaycard World Freerunning Championships will be marking the contestants' athletic skill, creativity, complexity and general flow. The freerunners in the 2009 competition will be expected to use the obstacles and urban landscape of Trafalgar Square to their full advantage as they attempt to make their freerunning routine the best in the competition.

The Barclaycard World Freerunning Championships run from 4pm - 8pm, Saturday 15th August 2009. If you would like to book free tickets for the event at Trafalgar Square, follow the link below to the official site and register before Wednesday 5th August.
