The ViewLondon Review
Barfly Camden is an eclectic music venue where upcoming talent can be sampled and well known bands such as The Strokes, The Vines and Elbow have graced the stage.
The Venue
Just down from the stables, along Chalk Farm Road, is the grungy looking Barfly Camden. Don’t be put off by the exterior as the bands that play here are worth checking out.
Upstairs is where you’ll find the live talent. Although not a huge space, it’s a place you can dance and buy drinks and memorabilia like T-shirts and baseball caps. Downstairs is a general bar area although it sometimes plays host to a DJ and music, too. Don’t expect too much from the hygiene factor as Barfly Camden is rock and roll and the toilets and grungy feel to the place are all part of the festival-like experience.
The Atmosphere
Depending on the band and the type of music playing on the night, the mood can range from appreciative swaying to full on moshing. The type of crowd you’ll find here depends on the acts performing, but they’re usually friendly. Bouncers on the door (mostly at weekends) are strict about their job, so be prepared; however, once inside the bar staff are friendly and mostly laid back.
The Music
Music is what Barfly Camden thrives on. From soul to The Smiths, pop punk to psychedelia. Of course, the live bands have made this place the music haven that it is and Coldplay, Oasis and the Stereophonics are just some of the big bands that have played here in the past. That said, the venue caters to a variety of musical tastes. They even run a Casino Royale night on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month, including ‘70s sounds.
Tickets to most of the events are very reasonable, ranging from free entry if you arrive early enough to £3-£10 for bigger events in advance. That is, of course, if they haven’t sold out.
The Drink
A basic selection of beer, soft drinks, spirits and wine come in plastic cups. Barfly doesn’t pretend that it’s the wine bar of the neighborhood and it certainly isn’t - best stick to the bottled beers.
The Last Word
Barfly Camden has a huge reputation and it’s easy to see why. A fantastic live music venue that’s affordable and fun.
