If your pennies are running low and the increasing price of a pint in London is putting you off going to the pub then Barter For Beer at The Marksman could be the answer. The Hackney local is offering beer, drinks and even food in exchange for goods and services rather than money.

Who Needs Money?
The owner of the Hackney boozer came up with the idea for Barter For Beer at The Marksman after she posted an ad for new CDs for the pub’s jukebox in exchange for a couple of drinks. And so the idea of bartering for beer was born. Rather than part with hard-earned pennies, punters can offer a range of goods of any monetary amount (although a paperclip is unlikely to get you far) in exchange for food and drink from their menu. The only condition is the amount you get in return has to be agreed in advance and all deals are final.

What You Can Offer
There's a wish list of items wanted from Barter For Beer at The Marksman called The Landlady’s Fancy that includes everything from a piano tuner, serving trays, vases and candles to children's toys. For example, a box of fake moustaches promises you a pint. Past items successfully swapped have included a sketch of the pub and a chandelier. Services can also be offered, a landscape gardener received a free meal after he bartered his ideas for transforming the roof terrace. Perhaps reaching for the stars a little, they've offered Banksy dinner in their private dining room upstairs to do a painting on the pub wall. You never know.

The Marlowe Currency
The Marksman has also introduced its own currency called The Marlowe, named after the owner's daughter. Only given to regulars, they are handed out like loyalty points and can be put towards the cost of a starter from the pub’s menu. This, in addition to the Barter For Beer at The Marksman event, hopes to ease the money woes of East End locals.

Barter For Beer at The Marksman is being held 7pm-9pm on 28th May 2009.
