Bear in the Square

Head to Trafalgar Square in the run up to Christmas to see the stunning Bear in the Square ice sculpture. The art installation is the creation of the Ice Bear Project organisation in partnership with the WWF World Wildlife Fund, and unlike many works of art, this is one that you can touch and help to shape.

Ice Bear Project
Carved from a huge block of ice by artist Mark Coreth, the Bear in the Square is a life size sculpture of a polar bear that will slowly melt during its ten day installation at Trafalgar Square to reveal a bronze skeleton at its core. A pubic art project with a strong environmental message, the bear can be seen on the Northern Terrace of the iconic central London landmark.

Make your mark
Visitors to the Bear in the Square exhibition have the chance to touch the ice sculpture as it melts, so the heat from your hands will actually help to change and shape the sculpture as it ages. The first project of its kind, it's hoped that after the London event cities such as new York, Paris and Rome will also host their own ice bear installations.

Environmental message
Kids, families and art lovers of all ages can enjoy the spectacle of the Bear in the Square ice sculpture in the run up to Christmas, but the installation also has a serious message about the plight of the polar bear and its Arctic home, which is increasingly endangered by climate change. Scientists estimate that there are only about 20 - 25,000 polar bears left in the world, in territory that stretches from Hudson Bay in Canada to northern Russia on the other side of the pole.

The Bear in the Square ice sculpture exhibition runs for ten days from Friday 11th December 2009. This exhibition is free to attend.
