Celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the start of the Swinging London music scene in the 1960s, the Beatles to Bowie exhibition London event at the National Portrait Gallery combines rarely seen portraits of iconic musicians with rock and pop memorabilia and ephemera. Titled Beatles to Bowie: The 60s Exposed, the exhibition includes many photos of stars from bands such as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and The Kinks that have never before been seen in public.

Beatles to Bowie Exhibition London
Displaying 150 photographs alongside 150 items such as magazines and illustrated sheet music, there should be plenty to keep pop fans and rock ‘n’ rollers happy at the Beatles to Bowie exhibition. London became well known in the 1960s as one of the world most exciting cultural capitals, and the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery aims to show how leading figures at the time fused music with art, fashion, and performance to memorable effect.

Famous faces
Expect to see more than a few famous faces represented at the Beatles to Bowie exhibition London event, which will also be touring the UK in 2010. The exhibition includes 100 rarely exhibited photographs of The Kinks, David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Marianne Faithfull, and Jimi Hendrix, as well as Billy Fury and The Who. The work of established photographers of the time such as Cecil Beaton and Norman Parkinson will also be shown alongside the up and coming talent of the day such as Fiona Adams and Philip Townsend.

Pop history
Other sections of the exhibition will focus on the rivalry between The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, as well as the emergence of progressive music and psychadelia and the impact made by female vocalists such as Cilla Black, Lulu and Sandie Shaw. Artifacts displayed in the exhibition include record sleeves, as well as editions of pop magazines such as Fabulous and Rave.

The Beatles to Bowie exhibition London event takes place at the National Portrait Gallery from Thursday 15th October 2009 – Sunday 24th January 2010. Gallery opening times are 10am – 6pm Monday – Wednesday and Saturday – Sunday, with late night openings from 10am – 9pm Thursday – Friday.
