The BFI 75th birthday events make for a fantastic month of cinematic one offs, parties and special screenings. With a time travelling themed all nighter, the chance to download 75 classic flicks for 75 pence, and a whole host of other rare cinema screenings, the BFI 75th birthday events programme is set to be a the biggest and best celebration of film, outside the London Film Festival.

Whether you want to party all weekend at the big 75th birthday bash or see which celebrities want to share their film choices with future cinema goers, there is plenty to excite and inspire. Check out our pick of the BFI 75th birthday events, and plan your screenings sessions now.

The highlight of the BFI 75th birthday events calendar will no doubt be the 75th birthday weekender, taking place from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th September. Celebrating with the theme of back to the future, you can spend all night in the BFI IMAX catching some of the best time travel movies around, or party hard with the AV Social, as it brings together club culture and cinema screenings into one unique event. Classic films are screening on the Saturday and Sunday, and kids workshops, filmd ebates and special guests will be making the most of the huge cinematic anniversary until it's time to go home.

The film subject for the duration of the BFI birthday season is The Time Machine. A great range of films using time as its key theme are showing until Wednesday 15th October. Films from the past, present and that present us with a vision of the future run the gamut from comedy, romance, sci fi, history and thriller to include the likes of Groundhog Day, Memento, Sunset Boulevard, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Brazil and A Matter of Life and Death.

For those with a serious interest in the BFI, Thursday 25th September gives you the chance to explore the history of the cinema itself. From 6.30pm onwards, you can enjoy key moments from the BFI cinema's past on screen.

From Thursday 18th September to Thursday 2nd October, the chance to see the amazing range of films made in the 1930s by the General Post Office Unit. From documentary to comedy, and musical to avant garde animation, the GPO film unit will take to the big screen as part of the BFI 75th birthday events programme.

Free cinema comes your way with the Cinema of Tomorrow screenings, giving you the chance to see two very different portraits of 50s London. The Wood Green Jazz Club is the star of the film in Momma Don't Allow, followed by a very unromantic look at Piccadilly Circus in the 1957 Nice Time on Saturday 13th September.
