An exhibition by Bharti Kher at Hauser and Wirth examines the nature of the rituals of daily life, as she used her signature found objects and bindis to create artworks and installations.

Bharti Kher at Hauser and Wirth
By collecting found objects such as mirrors of pieces of furniture, many of the items on show in the exhibition by Bharti Kher at Hauser and Wirth demonstrate the daily rituals undertaken by all of us in domestic and religious life. Whether it is applying a bindi, looking in the mirror or taking confession, they are all acts of daily self assessment.

Cultural symbols
Renowned for her use of bindis, the symbol of fertility worn by some Indian cultures, in the show by Bharti Kher at Hauser and Wirth this spring, visitors are able to see how mundane articles are transformed by the use of these small, colorful stick-ons. By combining them with everyday articles, the bindis bring together cultural and aesthetic notions in one ritualistic work.

Exhibition highlights
Several large scale pieces and an installation are also included in this show, which invite art fans to experience the work of Kher more intensely. One of the highlights of the exhibition by Bharti Kher at Hauser and Wirth is sure to be the main gallery installation, Confess. The walls are covered by bindis, a bare lightbulb hangs from the ceiling and a claustraphobic atmosphere is created by the staged decorum of the church, and a motorised rocking horse who has been transformed into a unicorn.

Religion and medicine
Various other works on show include medical charts covered with sperm shaped bindis in geometric patterns, and cross sections of a body giving birth. More metaphysical thoughts are explored in the piece Sing, which features a Tantric Buddhist standing bell, which is continually rubbed by a motorised mallet to produce an ongoing singing sound.

Inevitable Undeniable Necessary, the exhibition by Bharti Kher at Hauser and Wirth takes place from 10am - 6pm, Saturday 20th March - Saturday 15th May 2010. Entrance is free.
