Celebrate the 200th birthday of England's oldest public art gallery with the huge Big Bang at Dulwich Picture Gallery, which features live music, fireworks and fun for all the family.
Bicentenary celebrations
Marking the 200th anniversary of the day that the gallery first opened its doors to the public in 1811, The Big Bang at Dulwich Picture Gallery celebrates the birthday of a landmark cultural institution in grand style. The free event features everything from live falconry displays to fireworks, and also gives you the chance to clap your eyes on some of the beautiful and historic art that the gallery has built its reputation upon, all for free.
Live music
Fans of live music have plenty to look forward to at The Big Bang at Dulwich Picture Gallery, with singer Alexandra Carter leading the celebrations with music from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s in the cloisters. Visitors can also listen to 16th century music from Emily Atkinson and Kaitlin Ertsey in the gallery, as well as American tunes by Gershwin and Cole Porter, performed by Suzanne Holmes and Martin Byatt.
Family entertainment
Families with kids can take part in drop in workshops during The Big Bang at Dulwich Picture Gallery, and make a model of the gallery to wear with artist Erica Parrett. There's also live falconry displays in the gardens at 2pm and 3pm, and if all the arts and culture works up an appetite in you, there's food stalls from the likes of Barcelona Tapas, Sea Cow, Luca's Bakery and the Gallery Cafe to keep you happy.
Fireworks and more
The Big Bang's grand finale comes with a fireworks display at 5.15pm, to mark 200 years of publicly accessible art in the capital. As well as the free and one off celebration in January, the gallery is hosting a number of special events throughout 2011, including the Masterpiece a Month exhibition.
Masterpiece a Month at Dulwich Picture Gallery
The Big Bang at Dulwich Picture Gallery takes place from 12pm, Sunday 9th January 2011. Admission is free. The fireworks begin at 5.15pm.
