Scared of the dark? The black hole at Tate Modern is a specially commissioned arts installation experimenting in mass sensory deprivation. Head to the Turbine Hall, walk up the ramp of the giant steel sculpture and prepare to be plunged into a world of darkness within the How It Is installation.

How It Is
The creation of acclaimed Polish artist Miroslaw Balka, the black hole at Tate Modern is titled How It Is, and is the latest commission in the Unilever Series. Visitors can walk around and even under the giant steel sculpture, which is raised on two metre high stilts, before heading inside the pitch black interior.

Things that go bump
In contrast to the naturally lit Turbine Hall in which is sits, the black hole at Tate Modern contains no light whatsoever, so you'll need to keep your wits about you to avoid bumping into walls or other visitors while inside. Whether it's fear, uneasiness, excitement or a sense of adventure, the experience of making your way through the dark installation at the famous gallery is bound to provoke some kind of emotional response.

Turbine Hall exhibition
Measuring 13 metres high, 10 metres wide and 30 metres long, the black hole at Tate Modern installation is certainly an eye catching addition to the galllery's Turbine Hall. The exterior of the art work is reminiscent of a giant shipping container, and will be on show until April 2010.

The black hole at Tate Modern installation runs from Tuesday 13th October - Monday 5th April 2010 in the gallery's Turbine Hall. Admission is free. Gallery opening times are 10am - 6pm Sunday - Thursday and 10am - 10pm Friday - Saturday.
