Visit a recreation of William Blake's first and only solo exhibition at the Blake exhibition at Tate Britain. Originally shown in Soho in 1809, the reconstruced exhibition features nine of the works originally show together exactly 200 years ago.

Blake exhibition at Tate Britain
Marking the 200th anniversary of William Blake's first and only one man exhibition, the Blake exhibition at Tate Britain includes important loans from the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, as well as pieces from the Tate Collection. Significantly, the show includes the nine surviving works from the sixteen that were exhibited by Blake at his brother's shop on Golden Square, Soho, in May 1809.

Critical reception
This time round, the Blake exhibition at Tate Britain is bound to get a better response from critics and public alike. The original show was poorly attended and only received one, negative review in the press, which lead the eccentric British poet, artist and visionary to further withdraw from public life. Two hundred years later, William Blake is recognised as being one of the most important British artists of the Romantic Age, and the Blake 1809 show in London is expected to draw in large crowds.

Descriptive Catalogue
Featuring works such as Jacob's Ladder, pictured, the Blake 1809 exhibition is also accompanied by a new edition of Blake's Descriptive Catalogue, which is available to buy at the Tate. The catalogue gives vital insights into the artist's thoughts on himself, his work, the symbolism he uses, and the art world in which he was attempting to operate.

The Blake Exhibition at Tate Britain, which is titled Blake 1809, runs from Monday 20th April - Sunday 4th October 2009. Tate Britain is open daily from 10am - 5.50pm. Admission to the exhibition is free.
