Bling at Museum of Childhood celebrates the culture of jewellery and its design in the East End of London, with an exhibition in conjunction with the London College of Fashion.

Bling at Museum of Childhood
Taking a look at cultural significance and personal attachment, the exhibition invites kids to try and understand why we decorate parts of our body with precious metals and valuable gemstones. Wearing jewellery that belonged to someone that is no longer alive makes us feel closer to them, expensive materials make a statement about our wealth, and fashionable items give us a cutting edge look, so every piece has its background in some personal sentiment.

Statement jewellery
Whether it is a piece of gold Bengali wedding jewellery designed to signify something very specific to the wearer, or a simple plastic braclet that is worn for the joy of its colour, all jewellery can be special, significant, emotive or playful. Bling at Museum of Childhood examines the diversity of jewellery in the East End and takes a closer look at the stories behind various pieces.

Young designers on show
Much of the work on show at Bling at Museum of Childhood has been designed by local school children who have tried their hand at jewellery design for the very first time. Their contributions to the exhibition sit alongside pieces from students at the London College of Fashion, as well as contemporary jewellers who have connections with the East End.

Bling at Museum of Childhood takes place from Saturday 26th June - Sunday 14th November 2010. Entrance is free.
