A series of drawings by Bridget Riley at National Portrait Gallery are exhibited as part of their Intervenions series for 2010. Having displayed work from the likes of Andy Warhol, Franics Bacon and Frank Auerbach, Bridget Riley's work is now added to the prestigious list of artists.

Bridget Riley at National Portrait Gallery
Dating from the 1950s the portraits on display at the gallery all come from a collection of life drawings completed by Bridget Riley during her time as a student at Goldsmiths College. Giving fans of her work the chance to see work from before her abstract period, the pieces have never before been seen in public.

Abstract genius
Most people know Bridget Riley as an abstract artist, whose most famous pieces were created during the colour and pattern obsessed sixties. Seen as one of the greatest British abstract painters, she was a leading exponent of Op Art, based on the principals of optical illusion. Before securing her first solo exhibitions in 1962, she was still creating figurative drawings, and the display by Bridget Riley at National Portrat Gallery gives you the opportunity to see these fascinating early works.

Life drawings
15 life drawings make up the display of work by Bridget Riley at National Portrait Gallery, depicting her friends and family, alongside portraits of professional studio models. Produced in a range of material from conte crayon, pencil and oil on paper, these works are the precursor to the monchrome abstract artworks that were to make her name during the sixties. With the most recent exhibition in London based around her work taking place back in 2001, fans of her work will be keen to see these early portraits on show at the National Portrait Gallery.

The display of drawings by Bridget Riley at National Portrait Gallery, Bridget Riley Portraits, takes place from 10am - 6pm. Saturday 15th May - Sunday 5th December 2010. Entrance is free.
