A major British comic art exhibition takes place at Tate Britain over summer 2010 as the ground breaking comic artists of the UK gather to present their work. With a diverse range of art forms on show, this is an exhibition not to be missed by any lovers of graphic or comic art.

British Comic Art
Drawing together British comic art in an exhibition that features work from the 1600s to the present day, the show at Tate Britain highlights some of the very best cartoon and comedy writers the UK has ever known. With traditional British humour transformed into artworks, this exhibition should appeal to art and comedy fans alike.

Exhibition highlights
Bringing together paintings, drawings, sculpture, film and photography, the works on show in the British Comic Art exhibition invite you to have a chuckle as you look back at the comic traditions of saucy seaside postcards, bawdy illustrations and poltical satire. Featuring the likes of William Hogarth, Aubrey Beardsley, Edward Lear, Gerald Scarfe and Sarah Lucas, the exhibition charts the history of comic art over the last 400 odd years.

Comedy on canvas
The British are renowned for their unusual sense of humour the world over, and this exhibition does much to explain why. Whether you are tickled by absurd images or love a good piece of contemporary satire, there is much to make you laugh in the British Comic Art exhibition.

Only joking
As much as the Tate Britain exhibition looks at what we find funny and why, it also questions whether anything is beyond a joke. Is satire always justified or is it a form of propaganda? Do cartoons reinforce prejudices that should otherwise be challenged? Exploring the nature of the visual joke, the British Comic Art exhibition also looks further afield than the printed page to comical art in sculpture, installation and performance pieces, including film, radio and new media.

The British Comic Art exhibition at Tate Britain takes place from Wednesday 9th June - Sunday 5th September 2010. For more information or to book tickets for this event, click on the link below.
