Celebrating the very best in early cinema, the British Silent Film Festival will be held at the Barbican once more in 2011. The 14th such festival to take place in London, this year the theme is the use of sound and music in silent films.

British Silent Film Festival
Catering to movie buffs and lovers of films from the early years of cinema, the 2011 British Silent Film Festival showcases some of the very best British silent films. Some of the films have not been seen since they were first released several decades ago, so the festival provides a opportunity to see rare and vintage films on the big screen once more.

2011 theme
The theme for the 2011 British Silent Film Festival is the use of sound and music in British silent cinema. Celebrating the art of the silent film musician, the film screenings at the festival will be accompanied by live music by world renowned musicians such as John Sweeney, Gunter Buchwald, Philip Carli and Neil Brand.

Special film screenings
Highlights of the silent film festival include recreation of the cinema experience between the Great War and late silent period, as well as the relationship between radio and silent film. The Barbican cinema is also hosting the world premiere of the restored musical score for the Russian fantasy drama Morozko. Other films to be screened as part of the festival include Twinkletoes starring Colleen Moore, Pavement Butterfly starring Anna May Fong, and Helen of Four Gates starring Alma Taylor.

Talks and events
A number of special talks and events will accompany the film screenings at the 2011 festival, such as a show and tell presentation where musicians will be discussing how they can go about creating accompaniments to silent films. There are also events to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the British newsreel and demonstrations of how early filmmakers used live performance, mechanical recordings and more to make sure their films were anything other than silent.

The 14th British Silent Film Festival runs from Thursday 7th April - Sunday 10th April 2011. A full festival pass costs £90.00, while a single day pass costs £35.00. Single event tickets cost £10.50. Concessions are available - for more information, click on the link below.
