A wealth of iconic art is on display in Piccadilly at the groundbreaking Byzantium exhibition at Royal Academy. The first major show of Byzantine art in the UK for 50 years, the Byzantium exhibition at Royal Academy is essential viewing for the capital's arts, design and history enthusiasts.

From London to Constantinople
Be transported back to the lost world of medieval Constantinople with the Byzantium exhibition at Royal Academy, which spans the years 330AD, when the city was founded, to 1453, when it fell to the Ottoman Turks. With over 340 objects including icons, detached wall paintings, ivories, and gold and silver metalwork, this major exhibition reveals the rich diversity and skill of the artists within the Byzantine Empire, and brings their world back to life.

A world spanning Byzantium exhibition
The Royal Academy has negotiated loans of great works from the San Marco Treasury in Venice and St Catherine's Monastery, Mt. Sinai. Other items in the Byzantium exhibition have come from the USA, Russia, and the Ukraine. Some of the works on display have never been seen in public before, making this an important event in the London arts calendar.

Art from the masters
Highlights to look out for include items from the final flowering of Byzantine art after the Latin Crusaders left Constantinople. The empire was a true melting pot of different ideas and artistic influences, and the items from this era show an intriguing mix of Orthodox and Italian styles. The Academy's timely exhibition is a brilliant starting point for learning more about the rich history and culture of this part of Europe.

The Byzantium exhibition at Royal Academy is open 10am - 6pm Saturday - Thursday, 10am - 10pm Friday, Saturday 25th October 2008 - Sunday 22nd March 2009. Entrance is £3.00 - £12.00.
