Capturing the spirit of the early twentieth century in London, the Camden Town Group exhibition, Modern painters on show at Tate Britain gives a stark insight into the world of the newly modernised metropolis.
With the introduction of Post Impressionism to Britain, a key group of painters were at the core of modern painting, having been inspired by the likes of Van Gogh and Gaugin. The Camden Town Group were fascinated by the city they lived in and through their work, visitors will be able to revisit the early days of the motor car, the music hall, the people, the style, the sex and the murders of Camden in the 1910s.
Focusing on the key themes of their work, the Camden Town Group exhibition looks at this transitional period of time, when London was making the move from a heavy industrial city into a modern, urban machine. Fascinated with the changing ways of life occuring in London, the painters depicted images that encapsulated the constant shift in technology and attitudes in the city.
London buses, audiences at the theatre and in the music halls, gritty urban interiors and prostitutes posing in dark and dingy rooms all sum up the changing attitudes and advancing nature of modernity in the Camden Town Group exhibition. Capturing the mood of pre war London in a whirl of advancement and yet at the same time, portraying the dirt, the poverty and the ever increasing discrepancies between the rich and the poor of the city.
Depicting not just the city but the whole country moving forward into the uncharted territories of the modern age, the painters present a slice of North London life in vivd detail. With works from Spencer Gore, Harold Gilman, Robert Bevan, Charles Ginner and Walter Sickert all on show in the Camden Town Group exhibition, the viewer is invited to observe with the artists the wonders of the modern age and the squalor of the city.
On show at the Tate Britain, the exhibition features paintings from the Camden Town Group that have come from various different collections and is the first for over twenty years. The Camden Town Group exhibition, Modern Painters is on show until the 5th May.
