An exhibition of Camille Silvy at National Portrait Gallery examines one of the pioneers of early photography and brings to light many images which have not been on show to the public since the mid 19th century.
Camille Silvy at National Portrait Gallery
The first ever retrospective exhibtion to take place takes a look at Silvy's most productive period, from 1857 - 1867, showing his influence in a variety of different areas from theatre, fashion, military and street photography. As he worked under the patronage of Queen Victoria, he also captured royalty, statesmen, aristocrats, celebrities and the country gentry on camera.
19th century Rankin
As photography became more popular and accessible to the masses, Silvy became renowned for his work producing cartes de visite, which were small, cheap, collectable photos. But alongside his work at the Bayswater studio where they churned out over 17,000 portraits in this new format, he also worked to produce serious photographic studies. In the exhibition by Camille Silvy at National Portrait Gallery, visitors can see many of his smaller pieces alongside his larger works.
River Scene
One of the most famous photos on show by Camille Silvy at National Portrait Gallery is his work River Scene, France taken in 1858. This is considered to be his masterpiece and alongside his series on twilight, sunlight and fog, visitors and photography fans can see his anticipation of digital manipulation with the illusions he created in the dark room. Drawing on both public and private collections, the exhibition features a vast body of work, along with several letters from him to his parents describing the daily business of the studio, and a selection of his Daybooks, which provide a unique record of his life as a photographer.
Photography of Modern Life, 1834 - 1910, the exhibition by Camille Silvy at National Portrait Gallery takes place from 10am - 6pm, Thursday 15th July - Sunday 24th October 2010. Tickets cost £5.00 or £4.00 concession. For more information or to book tickets for this event, phone 020 7907 7079.
