The Canaletto exhibition at National Gallery brings together a stunning collection of work by the artist and his rivals, many of which haven't been seen in Britain for several decades. Featuring 50 or so loans from public and private collections, this is set to be one of the most popular landscape painting exhibitions of the year.
Canaletto exhibition at National Gallery
Centring around the city of Venice, the exhibition is entitled Venice: Canaletto and His Rivals, and features work by other 18th century artists such as Luca Carlevarijs, Michele Marieschi, Bernado Bellotto and Francesco Guardi, covering the period from 1707 to 1793. Highlighting the extraordianary skills of the Venetian view painters, this is your chance to see the best of the city on canvas.
Giovanni Antonio Canal
One of the foremost painters of landscapes at the time, Canaletto trained as a theatrical scene painter, and it was on his trip to Rome in 1719 which inspired him to attempt depicting real scenes for public consumption. By the late 1720s he had not only captured the warm Mediterranean sunshine on canvas so perfectly but also the views that surrounded him, giving rise to his reputation as a master of the genre. At the Canaletto exhibition at National Gallery you can clearly see his exceptional talent and the far reaching influence of his style.
Exhibition highlights
Some of the most popular exhibits on show at the Canaletto exhibition at National Gallery are sure to be two paintings which portray the festivals and ceremonies of Venice. The Molo from the Bacino di San Marco on Ascension Day and The Reception of the French Ambassador both demonstrate Canaletto's highly developed skills as a view painter.
Painterly rivals
Despite being considered the best of his artistic contemporaries, there were some painters who posed a real threat to Canaletto's Venetian crown. At the height of his fame, his workshop gave the finest training to view painters around, which resulted in Canaletto's nephew Bernardo Bellotto working very closely with his talented uncle. Renowned for depicting his scenes with a cold, wintry light, he also gained a reputation for his vibrant blue skies. Another rival of the time was Michele Marieschi whose work featured broad brushstrokes and a much more spontaneous feel. Work from both these artists, along with several other of his contemporaries, also feature in the Canaletto exhibition at National Gallery.
Venice, the Canaletto exhibition at National Gallery takes place from 10am - 6pm, Wednesday 13th October 2010 - Sunday 16th January 2011. Tickets are £12.00, £11.00 concession, £6.00 for students and free for under 12s.
