Taking a trip down the rabbit hole and into a surreal wonderland, the Big and Small (Gross und Klein) play starring Cate Blanchett at Barbican is part of the London 2012 Festival, which celebrates the cultural life of London in the run up to the Olympic Games.

Big and Small
An English adaptation of the original play by acclaimed German playwright Botho Strauss, Big and Small takes the audience on a surreal journey across contemporary Germany and into a hotel dining room in Morocco, where the main character, Lotte, sits by herself. Fans of the famous Australian actress can see Cate Blanchett at Barbican as she takes to the theatre stage in a Sydney Theatre Company production directed by Benedict Andrews.

Surreal wonderland
Like Lewis Carroll's iconic character Alice, at times Lotte is too big for her environment, and sometimes too small to be noticed. Whether she's outside looking in through a window or buzzing an ignored intercom, Lotte's attempts to connect with her fellow humans are always disappointed. Theatre goers can see Cate Blanchett at Barbican as the award winning stage and screen actress treads the boards in what promises to be one of the highlights of the 2012 season.

London 2012 Festival

Acclaimed actress
One of the most revered actresses of her generation, Cate Blanchett is renowned for taking risks and portraying a wide variety of characters on screen. Blanchett won an Oscar for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator and has also memorably appeared as the elf queen Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as Queen Elizabeth I in the 1998 biopic Elizabeth.

Live on stage
In addition to her on screen performances, Cate Blanchett is also the artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company with her husband, Andrew Upton. The company's production of Big and Small gives fans of the award winning actress the chance to see her perform live on stage as part of a cast of 14, in what is bound to be one of the highlight theatre events of 2012.
