The golden age of elaborate moustaches, dapper tweed outfits, monocles and pipes is celebrated in all its glory at this year’s Chap Olympiad. This is an occasion for chaps and chapettes to don their finest fancy garments and take part in a series of sporting events, and if you like the thought of taking part but are not fully fit, never fear, with a list of events that includes Butler Baiting and Swooning, there is absolutely no need for sporting endeavour or athleticism at the Chap Olympiad.
Stick that in your pipe
A prominent feature of the Chap Olympiad is the ceremonial smoking of the pipe. It may take you by surprise to hear that smoking is such a vital part of the day’s activities but this is no ordinary event. In fact, pipe smoking actually marks the start of the day’s events, as all the Olympic contestants have a good puff in preparation for the farcical events to follow.
Spectator sports
You may want to turn up and cheer on the chaps as they go through the gruelling process of sipping gin and tonics and participating in the silly sports, all whilst trying to still look their best. If you do fancy it, you’ll need to head down to Bedford Square Gardens where spectators, as well as being allowed to bring their own picnics, will be able to quench their thirst with a well-stocked bar selling those all important Martini's and G&T’s.
Forget traditional Olympic sports such as the hurdles, pole vault or high jump, the Chap Olympiad has some events that will have you roaring with laughter. They include:
Swooning – The age of the cad is not over, it’s alive and well. Contestants with a twitch and a glint in their eye do their utmost to bring a blush to the ladies' cheeks and make them swoon.
Hair Coursing – Groom a splendid wig using oversized hairbrushes and combs while racing past the finishing barber's pole.
Moving Hat Stand – The aim of the game in this event is to throw your hat onto a hat stand which is being moved around at random.
Dressage
A highlight of the day’s events sees chaps taking the role of a horse and the ladies acting as riders. After a backbreaking course that includes a number of obstacles, only the toughest chaps will still be left standing.
The Chap Olympiad takes place in Bedford Square Gardens on Saturday 7th July - Sunday 8th July 2012. Opening hours are 12pm - 11am each day. Tickets cost £20.00 per day, or £30.00 for a two day pass. For more information and to book tickets, click on the Buy Tickets button.
