Chelsea Flower Show
Chelsea Flower Show

When

Tuesday 22nd May - Saturday 26th May 2012

Where

Royal Hospital, Chelsea

The Chelsea Flower Show is probably the most famous horticultural affair in the world and takes place every May. This year the event is held rather unsurprisingly in Chelsea in the grounds of the Royal Hospital.

Flower show history
Originally known as the Great Spring Show, the event was first held in Kensington in 1862 – although the Chelsea Flower Show moved to its current location in 1913.

Exhibitions
The show features hundreds of exhibitors in total – coming from as far away as Sri Lanka, Jamaica, South Africa, Germany and Australia to name just a few. Exhibits at the Chelsea Flower Show are judged by specialist panels and awarded Gold, Silver-Gilt, Silver and Bronze medals.

Show stats
This year’s Chelsea Flower Show features around 600 exhibitors, including 50 gardens and 100 exhibitors, including an array of top designers. New features for 2012 include a new zone titled the Fresh Gardens and Tradestands, where you can discover the latest in garden technology.

Environmental themes
Not surprisingly for an event that is so closely linked with the natural world, the 2012 show puts a strong emphasis on sustainability, recycling and environmental responsibility in the garden. And if you want to get some ideas on how to put your green fingers to good use in the smallest of green city spaces, then there should be plenty of inspiration and advice available in the urban gardens area.

The sell off
One of the biggest events of the show is the sell off on the last day. As all the visitors and exhibitors have to leave the grounds, exhibitors sell off many of their displays and products. Be sure to take note of what you want to buy (some sellers will even reserve for you) and that you have the means to get it home.

Flowers across London
If you haven't managed to get your hands on some flower show tickets for 2012, then fret not, as there are plenty of other floral themed events taking place across London to keep you happy. Click on the links below for more information on edible flower dishes and flower displays across the city.
