Spend a weekend this summer celebrating one of the season’s most popular fruits, the cherry, with Cherry Day at Borough Market. Featuring cherry-themed products for sale and even the chance to showcase your own cherry-based creations, the event is sure to be a hit with everyone with a sweet tooth.

Cherries galore
2009’s cherry celebrations in the capital will feature stalls at Borough Market selling British cherries and cherry-themed foodie favourites. Stalls taking part include Turnips and Booths, which will be selling British cherries and cherry smoothies, Burnt Sugar, with Summer Sunshine Chocolate and Cherry Fudge, and Sillfield Farm, which will have British Cherry and Wild Boar Pie on sale.

Summer fruit
Cherries are one of the quintessential summer foods, and National Cherry Day is celebrated in honour of the humble fruit. Whether you’ve picked them straight from the tree or bought a punnet from your local supermarket, as long as they’re British cherries you can use them to make your own creations for a National Cherry Day competition.

CherryBake
As part of Cherry Day at Borough Market, a baking competition will be held featuring creations from cherry fans across the capital. At 2.30pm on Saturday 18th July judges including Henrietta Green from FoodLoversBritain.com, Ed Baines from Taste The Nation, Sheila Dillon of Radio 4’s food programme and Oliver Rowe from Konstam will take part in CherryBake, a competition to see who can make the best cakes, pies, pastries and more featuring cherries. Dishes registered so far include white cherry jelly, spiced cherry cheesecake, cherry and kirsch preserve, cherry Turkish delight and cherry pecan muffins, so if you’re interested in getting involved be sure to register and bring your dish on the day.

CherryAid
Cherry Day at Borough Market is in benefit of CherryAid, an organisation that hopes to raise awareness for British cherries. According to CherryAid, there’s been a 90 per cent decrease in cherry orchards in Britain over the last 50 years, and around 95 per cent of the cherries that we do eat are imported from other countries. National Cherry Day events in London and across the country aim to celebrate the British cherry and make sure there’s enough left for future generations to enjoy.

Events supporting Cherry Day at Borough Market take place from 16th – 18th July 2009. The CherryBake competition takes place at 2.30pm, 18th July 2009. Entrants to the CherryBake competition must register by midnight, 15th July 2009. To register, click the link below.
