The Chorus Festival London event at Southbank Centre in May celebrates the power of the human voice for making music. With plenty of different styles, genres and approaches to singing, Chorus Festival 2011 is the perfect event for those that love the art of song.
Chorus Festival
London welcomes gospel, indie music, world music, acapella and classical music once again over the course of the Chorus Festival 2011. For those that love folk music there is the Martin Carthy 70th birthday concert with traditional ballads and songs. If huge choral works are your thing, then head for the Massive Messiah performance which sees a 750 strong choir sing Hendel's masterpiece, and if you simply want to improve your own singing then there are the choral club practice sessions.
Sing a long a Southbank
Bringing together a huge variety of choirs and choral events, the Chorus Festival is a back once again with plenty of different ways to get everyone singing. Having launched the Voicelab choir back in February 2007, the Southbank Centre is encouraging everyone to take part in the choral celebrations with a series of workshops covering everything from singing and mental wellbeing, the voice, ageing and emotions, and singing for the brain.
Music for all
Alongside the interactive workshops and stunning live performances at the Chorus Festival this year, you can also take part in a series of freestage sessions around the Southbank Centre site. The From Youngest to Oldest Freestage showcases the talents of various children's choirs and singing groups for the elderly, before ending in an audience sing along, while the free Everyone Aloud event also encourages full audience participation.
Festival highlights
There are several major highlights in the interactive musical festival this year including a special performance by female alternative indie choir Gaggle. There's also a special 20th anniversary showcase by the London Gay Men's Chorus, as well as a heart warming concert by Welsh boys' choir Only Boys Aloud.
