An exhibition by Chris Ofili at Tate Britain takes place during 2010, bringing together work from the mid 1990s up to the present day. Renowned for his vibrant use of colour and the unusual inclusion of elephant dung in his paintings, fans of his work will be keen to see this exhibition at Tate Britain.
Chris Ofili
With a show simply entitled Chris Ofili, Tate Britain have curated an exhibition of the artists work that is the largest so far in the UK. With 45 paintings along with several graphite drawings on show, there is plenty of art to see from one of the artists who rubbed shoulders with Damien Hirst in the Saatchi exhibition Sensation, back in the nineties.
Elephant dung on show
Renowned for his use of elephant poo to enhance his works, Chris Ofili has a reputation for using this and other mixed media to give his paintings a startling vibrancy. Visitors to the exhibition by Chris Ofili at Tate Britain can see glitter, resign, map pins and magazine cut outs as part of the paintings layers, demonstrating his ability to fuse different forms into his instantly recognisable art.
Exhibition highlights
Born in Manchester and with Nigerian background, much of the work in Chris Ofili at Tate Britain takes inspiration from his African roots. Several signatures pieces are on show in the exhibition including Afrodizzia, The Holy Virgin Mary and Blossom. No Woman, No Cry, a portrait of a weeping woman created after the Stephen Lawrence Enquiry will no doubt touch many of the Londoners who attend the exhibition, being a matter close to their hearts.
London to Trinidad
Another highlight of the show is a large installation entitled The Upper Room which depicts 13 canvases painted with rhesus macaque monkeys, which have been displayed in a room designed by architect David Adjaye. This famous piece can be compared to the more simple style paintings created by Chris Ofili since his move from London to Trinidad in 2005. Continuing to be inspired by expansive sources such as the Bible and Trinidad's landscape and mythology, he has created work with a restricted palette and vivid colours.
