The Chris Ofili exhibition London event takes place at Tate Britain this spring as the artist renowned for his colourful canvases and use of elephant dung hosts a full on retrospective. Showcasing work from the last 15 years or so, the Chris Ofili exhibition is certain to attract fans from the art world and newcomers to his style.

Chris Ofili exhibition
London was home for Chris Ofili for many years having been one of the famous Young British Artists backed by Saatchi back in the nineties. A contemporary of Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin, Chris Ofili featured in the sensational Sensation exhibition and has been a major contender on the contemporary art scene ever since.

Art history
Renowned for his colorful creations and the use of elephant dung in many of his works, the Chris Ofili exhibition demonstrates exactly why he is one of the most internationally recognised artists of his generation. Depicting ideas on canvas that mix faith, popular culture and the profane, he won the Turner Prize in 1998 with the first painting in 12 years to have taken the title. He also represented Britain in the Venice Biennale in 2003.

Inspired by his roots
Although British born and bred, Chris Ofili has regularly used his African heritage for inspiration in his work. On show in the Chris Ofili exhibition are several examples of the use of cultural history. Since his move to Trinidad from London in 2005, he has used a wide range of influences including Zimbabwean cave paintings, blaxploitation movies, comic book heroes and hip hop icons.

Mixed media
Over 45 paintings are included in the Chris Ofili exhibition at Tate Britain, along with a selection of drawings and watercolours. All created in his instantly recognisable style, the works are colourful and expressive, and many feature his trademark use of elephant dung. Alongside the excretia, gillter, resign, map pins and excerpts from glossy magazine are also used to add layers to the canvases.

Exhibition highlights
Fusing the sacred and the profane, there are several pieces on show in this Chris Ofili exhibition which will no doubt be deemed as highlights for fans of his work. No Woman, No Cry which depicts a weeping woman and was painted around the time of the Stephen Lawrence Enquiry, and The Holy Virgin Mary, which caused controversy when it was exhibited as part of the Saatchi Sensation exhibition in the 1990s. Visitors will also be keen to see The Upper Room which is owned by the Tate trustees and features 13 separate paintings of rhesus macacque monkeys in a wood panelled room.

The Chris Ofili exhibition, Chris Ofili at Tate Britain takes place from 10am - 5.50pm, Wednesday 27th January - Sunday 16th May 2010. Tickets are £10.00, £8.50 for concessions.
