An exhibition by Christen Kobke at National Gallery takes place this spring highlighting the work of this 19th century Danish painter. Well known in his own country, this is the first time his painting have been shown in a solo exhibition in Britain.

Christen Kobke at National Gallery
Entitled, Christen Kobke, Danish Master of Light, the exhibition focuses on his use of light in depicting landscapes, portraits and various national monuments in Denmark. Comprising 48 different works, this is a chance for anyone with a passion for 19th century art to see a show by a little known artist whose paintings deserve more attention.

Painting Denmark
Much of the art on show in the exhibition by Christen Kobke at National Gallery reflects his home country and town. Presented with his unique skill for painting and sketching outdoors, the works depict topographical highlights of Copenhagen and various national monuments. Despite making the artistic pilgrimage to Italy that was expected of most 19th century artists, Kobke stayed mostly within his home town of Copenhagen, and concentrated on depicting the lanscapes and people that were familiar to him.

The Golden Age
The first half of the 1900s was deemed a Golden Age for Denmark as the country achieved a diverse range of intellectual, scientific and cultural high points. However, the country still suffered from economic collapse in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars and was a time of great social inequality. As Denmark began to recover from the climate of unease, Kobke reflected the renewal of national pride and the restablishment of peaceful and ordered society on canvas. On show in the exhibition by Christen Kobke at National Gallery are several works that demonstrate his ability to portray the people of Denmark and their surroundings with a profound significance.

The exhibition of Christen Kobke at National Gallery, Danish Master of Light, takes place from Wednesday 17th March - Sunday 13th June 2010. Entrance is free.
