London Christmas lights really light up the capital's streets during the bleak winter months. Christmas in London just wouldn’t be Christmas without the stunning array of decorative lights that adorn the streets throughout the festive season, bringing light and colour to London throughout the winter.
Switched on for 2009The switching on of Christmas lights in the West End have become landmark occasions in London each year, drawing crowds in their thousands on separate nights in the approach to Christmas. This year the Regent Street and Oxford Street lights are being lit up in a coordinated event to celebrate the premiere of the Disney adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic a Christmas Carol, while the Bond Street and Marylebone Christmas lights are lit in two separate, free events, guaranteeing festive fun for visitors to the capital’s premier shopping district.
Light installation at Covent GardenSome of the most unusual Christmas lights in London are being set up in Covent Garden for 2009, making the Piazza look deliciously festive. The area is being transformed by four large chandeliers, incorporating thousands of LED lights that are suspended over the spaces in the halls and the Covent Garden market building. Taking place from Monday 9th November 2009 onwards, these Christmas lights are a seriously festive affair.
Brighten up your Christmas shoppingMake an occasion out of your Christmas shopping and visit the West End on winter evenings to shop under the glow of festive lights. Christmas lights will be lit throughout the run up to Christmas on Oxford Street, Regent Street and Bond Street, adding seasonal flavour to the world-famous London shopping district. The lights will stay up into the New Year, so you can make the most of the January sales whilst still enjoying festive decorations.
Trafalgar SquareThe annual Trafalgar Square Christmas tree lighting ceremony takes place on Thursday 3rd December in which a tree given by the people of Norway is lit in an enchanting, historic ceremony.
