To mark the beginning of the East London festival in March, a series of pealing bells throughout churches in East London will start at 6pm, and move around that quarter of the city in a joyous and musical celebration.
Beginning with St Pauls Cathedral, the church bells in East London will follow the pattern set out in the historic London nursery rhyme, Oranges and Lemons, creating a wonderful music start to the festival, which promises plenty of exciting arts, music, fashion, food and cultural events across throughout the month.
The pealing of the church bells in East London will last approximately two hours and take in over 20 of Londons churches, where they will peal the quarter hour in succession. From the great cathedral of St Pauls down to the St Woolnoth in the City, the church bells will ring out in spectacular style, as they did for the original opening of the festival in 2007.
This amazing musical event signifies the beginning of the special festival that celebrates the arts and culture of East London: its diversity, its cultural history and its artistic and creative heritage. Over four hundred events are due to take place during the East London festival, and the activities will range from fashion shows to live music, kids and family days and food tasting events.
Bells ringing out across London is a historic and significant noise, as in the past church bells were used to signal danger to the area or as a cause for celebration, such as a wedding or the coronation of the monarch. The pealing of the church bells in East London is a fabulously pertinent way to start the festival and an East London church is definitely the place to be for the start of the festival.
