A brand new installation that aims to uncover the inner workings of science and scientists, Cocoon at Darwin Centre features high tech installations and interactive activities for young and old alike.

Lifting the lid on science
With the capacity for up to 2,500 people to travel through the interactive installation each day, Cocoon at Darwin Centre is one of the highlights of the recently opened Darwin Centre at the Natural History Museum. Serving as a state of the art scientific research and collections archive, the Darwin Centre will be used by over 200 scientists at a time, and also boasts an impressive public programme alongside all the research taking place.

Architectural feat
Protecting the 17 million insect and three million plant specimens kept in the facility, Cocoon at Darwin Centre is an eight storey high, 65 metre long cocoon shaped installation. The largest sprayed concrete curved structure in Europe, Cocoon stands as an impressive arts and architectural achievement, irrespective of its value to the world of natural history and science.

Behind the scenes
With its viewing decks, video and intercom, Cocoon and Darwin Centre aims to give you a unique and unprecedented insight into the working lives of the Natural History Museum scientists as they put in time at molecular and imaging labs, specimen preparation spaces and collection areas. Cocoon also has over 40 high tech installations and interactive activities which explore how scientists discover and name new species, decode DNA, and research aspects of the natural world in a bid to fight diseases such as malaria or combat climate change.

Cocoon at Darwin Centre opens on Tuesday 15th September 2009. The Darwin Centre can be found in the Orange Zone at the Natural History Museum. Admission is free, but timed booking applies; call 0207 942 5725 for more information.
