Up for sale in the Colony Room Club auction is an astonishing complete mural created by artist Michael Andrews. Taking place on Saturday 27th September 2008, the sale of goods from the infamous Colony Room Club is part of a larger sale of modern and contemporary art and design, that will no doubt attract many moden art fans.
Renowned for its famous list of clientelle and the unusual bar service style, where different artists and creative types take on the mantle of bar steward for the night, and prices are often picked at random out of the air rather than from a specific list, the Colony Room Club auction sees the end of an artistic era as items go from the club go under the hammer as the club moves house in December.
After 60 years in one location, the Colony Room Club is upping sticks and relocating, meaning that several articles from the original Soho venue will be up for sale in the modern and contemporary art sale at Lyon and Turnbull. Famous for being frequented by the likes of Franics Bacon, Lucian Freud, Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin, the Colony Room Club has been added to over the years by a series of artists, who have left their mark on the club with not only their artwork, but their boozing and debating.
The highlight of the Colony Room Club auction will no doubt be the mural, which is fifteen feet long, and shows a series of picnickers that take inspiration from the Bonnard work of the 19th century. It has been a permanent part of the furnishings at the club since the 1950s and was painted by Michael Andrews in leiu of an unpaid bar bill.
And its not just the mural that will be up for sale in the Colony Room Club auction at the end of September, more of the fixtures and fittings from the venue will accompany it. The original nicotine stained banquette and lamps that have stood in front of the painting for many years, will accompany the painted piece of Hessian in the auction as a kind of installation, rather than just a painting.
The Colony Room Club itself was founded back in 1948 by Muriel Belcher who ran the club until 1979. It has been a focus for the artistic community ever since, and is due to celebrate its 60th birthday later on this year. With the lease due to expire in December, the club is now moving to new premises and is therefore selling various pieces of artwork along with the mural. Other artists work to feature in the Colony Room Club auction include Terry Frost, Henry Moore, Stanley Spencer, William Scott, Kenneth Martin, Harry Bertoia, Tess Jaray, Jonathan Plumb, John Hoyland, Alan Davie, David Nash, Mark Quinn, Grayson Perry, Damien Hirst, Sam Taylor Wood, Matthew Richie, Sean Scullt and Banksy.
