A contemporary South African photography exhibition takes place at the V&A Museum this year as the venue showcases over 150 different works produced over the last decade.

Contemporary South African photography exhibition
Bringing to London the vibrant and exciting culture that has expanded in South African over the last ten years, the V&A is displaying some of the countries most inventive photographers. Celebrating all aspects of life in South Africa, the show examines the radical ways in which identity, gender, class and politics have been reworked.

Figures and Fictions
Entitled Figures and Fictions, the contemporary South African photography exhibition examines 17 different photographers and their work. Highlighting specific issues that relate to them or inspire their artwork, each piece included in the show brings into focus the question of the identity of the figure, be it literal or metaphorically speaking.

Post Apartheid culture
Mant of the photos on show in the exhibition focus on the dramatic change in attitude from post Apartheid South Africans. Bringing out both the excitement and urgency in the need for change, the pictures demonstrate its local context, colonial history, ethnography, anthropology and journalism as the photographers deal with the country's history and blend it with contemporary issues. Depicting a people undergoing a shift whilst still referencing their past, the contemporary South African photography exhibition gives a fascinating view of a country and its people.

South African photographers
Featuring their works in the contemporary South African photography exhibition are the likes of Pieter Hugo, David Goldblatt, Jodi Bieber and Kudzani Chiurai. Mixing both well established names and up and coming talent, the photographers on show are given the chance to explore and explain the reasoning behind their pictures, and shed further light on the projects they have undertaken, such as xenephobia, black empowerment, the history of Afikaners, cross cultural dressing and street culture.

Figures and Fictions, the contemporary South African photography exhibition takes place from Tuesday 12th April - Sunday 17th July 2011 at V&A Museum. Tickets are £6.00 or £4.00 for students and 12-17 year olds.
