The Cult of Beauty exhibition takes place at the V and A Museum in 2011 as it traces the history and influence of the Aesthetic Movement in British art. Looking at the merging of fine and design arts as part of the movement, the exhibition features some of the best known 19th century painters, designers and creative forces from Britain as it celebrates their achievements.

Cult of Beauty exhibition
Dedicated to revolutionising the relationship between art and society, the Aesthetic Movement brought together the fine and the design side of art, and produced some of the most beautiful art of the 19th century. On show in the Cult of Beauty exhibition at the V and A are a collection of artworks from various artists, demonstrating their artistic skills and their amazing ability to transform an avant garde movement into a cultural phenomenon.

Art and ethics
Having formed after the meeting of the Pre Raphaelite painters Rossetti and Burne-Jones and designer William Morris, the Aesthetic Movement went onto cover a broad range of artistic sensibilities. Featuring paintings, furniture design, interiors and architecture, their influence was far reaching. Having started as a small group of avant garde artists, the Cult of Beauty exhibition demonstrates just how readily society began to take on their trends, in the world of fashion, art and photography.

Fashionable art
Having grown to become a major force in the artistic and creative worlds, the Aesthetic Movement began to see influences in almost all levels of polite society. With paintings, furniture, ceramics, metalworks, wallpapers, photos and costumes all on show in the Cult of Beauty exhibition, visitors to the V and A Museum are able to see just how readily available this style was. Not only were the artists and craftsmen creating work for designers and manufacturers, but for a new breed of retailers too such as Liberty's, where their designs were readily available for consumers to purchase.
