CultureLine Summer Discovery Weekend

When

Friday 6th August - Sunday 8th August 2010

Where

10 museums and galleries in East London

With special exhibitions, guided walks, live music and more, the CultureLine Summer Discovery Weekend aims to get you looking at the cultural offerings of East London with fresh eyes.

Museums and galleries
A collaborative project organised by 10 museums and galleries along the new London Overground East London Line which runs from east to south east London, the CultureLine Summer Discovery Weekend features everything from costumed characters to live African music. The Royal London Hospital Museum, Hackney Museum, Whitechapel Gallery, Crystal Palace Museum, Geffrye Museum and other arts and history venues are hosting special events for all ages over the action packed weekend.

Talks and walks
The cultural weekender kicks off with a special preview event at the Whitechapel Gallery, where art lovers can enjoy a talk focusing on the gallery's Alice Neel exhibition. Other highlights of the CultureLine Summer Discovery Weekend include a guided tour of the Crystal Palace, one of London's most famous lost buildings, as well as the chance to take a look around a restored 18th century almshouse courtesy of the Geffrye Museum.

Events for kids
Younger culture vultures will also find plenty to keep them happy over the CultureLine Summer Discovery Weekend, with events including boardgames, mask making and nursery rhyme sessions at the Geffrye Museum and an arty nature trail for all the family at the Horniman Museum. Kids can also feast their eyes on the Myths and Monsters exhibition at the Horniman Museum, which features animatronics, specimens and eye catching photography.

Weekend highlights
Other highlights of the cultural weekender include the hands-on Treasures from Trash exhibition at the Museum of Croydon, where families can make their own cup to take home, as well as live music from Caribbean Steel International at the Geffrye Museum. The Brunel Museum is also joining in with all the fun by hosting the Thames Tunnel Fancy Fair, in which local children recreate an underwater Victorian spectacle.
