A major Damien Hirst auction at Sothebys takes place in September 2008 as possibly the most famous artist in Britain sells of some of his newest works. Following on from his Pharmacy auction in 2004, the Damien Hirst auction at Sothebys is set to break new records for modern art sales.

An entire collection of works that would normally go on show in a gallery will be placed under the hammer at this very unusual Damien Hirst auction at Sothebys, with some pieces of artwork that are bound to go for hundreds of thousands, if not millions of pounds. Having sold his platinum and diamond skull For the Love of God at auction for £50 million last year, there will no doubt be plenty of art punters out there willing to splash the cash for an original and previously unknown Damien Hirst.

Entitled Beautiful Inside My Head Forever, the auction will include a preview period where members of the public will treat Sothebys as a gallery so that they can view the amazing artwork about to go up for sale. Artists do not usually take their work straight from the studio to the auction house, but as the last twenty years of art from Damien Hirst can testify, he is nothing if not out of the ordinary.

There will be many new pieces of work up for sale in the Damien Hirst auction at Sothebys, but no doubt the star of the show will be the sculpture Golden Calf. An enormous piece that measures over two metres in length and over three metres in height, the piece features a bull set in formaldehyde with 18 carat gold cast hooves and horns, and a solid gold disc crowning his head. The case is also made from gold plated stainless steel, and the entire structure sits on a massive marble plinth.

An extraordinary work that continues with the ever present themes in Damien Hirst's work of science, religion, death and beauty, the Golden Calf is expected to be the highlight of the auction at Sothebys and is estimated to sell for around £8 to £12 million. Further pieces that will be included in the Damien Hirst auction will be announced nearer the time, but they will most likely be just as controversial and astonishing as his previous works.

With around 500 people bidding on items in the Pharmacy auction at Sothebys four years ago, and raising around £11 million on just 168 lots, there will certainly be a lot of eager art fans and collectors keen to get a piece or two at the auction in September. The Damien Hirst auction also takes place twenty years after his Freeze exhibition, which brought the notorious artist to public light for the first time. Marking the anniversary and taking his art into a new phase, Beautiful Inside My Head Forever is set to be the highlight of the art calender for autumn 2008.

The Damien Hirst auction at Sothebys takes place on 7pm Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th September 2008. The preview of works included in the sale begins on Saturday 5th and ends on Monday 15th September 2008.
