From the dark and nightmarish Blue Velvet to the beautifully shot biopic of The Elephant Man which won actor John Hurt an Oscar nomination, the season of films by David Lynch at BFI Southbank celebrates one of the masters of modern cinema.

Cult hero
A month-long retrospective which celebrates one of the most pioneering talents in contemporary American cinema, the David Lynch at BFI Southbank season includes screenings of Eraserhead and early shorts from the late 1960s and early 1970s, through to 2006's three hour long Inland Empire. The retrospective gives Lynch fans the rare chance to see 30 years' worth of the director's films on the big screen once more.

Lynchian delights
Few filmmakers have been so influential that their name becomes an adjective, but the term 'Lynchian' proves that David Lynch's own distinct fusion of surrealism, dreamlike or even nightmarish sequences, quirkiness and hard to define uncanniness has made a profound impact on modern cinema. The David Lynch at BFI Southbank season traces the director's debt to the European avant garde movement and includes both critically acclaimed films as well as those that did not meet with widespread approval when they were first released.

Special events
Highlights of the David Lynch at BFI Southbank season include a study day where fans can explore the dream worlds of the master filmmaker and catch a rare screening of the 1987 Arena documentary, Ruth Roses and Revolver. There's also an introductory talk from season curator Antony Todd, who will be discussing Lynch's transition out of cult obscurity between the release of Eraserhead and Blue Velvet.
