A David Shrigley exhibition London event takes place at Hayward Gallery this spring as the Glasgow based artist enjoys his first ever major solo show in the UK. Featuring a variety of works including drawings, painting, animation, sculpture, photos and installations, this is a fantastic opportunity for any fans of his work to see a collection of pieces which are either brand new or have never been seen in the UK before.
David Shrigely exhibition
London is the next lucky location to host a David Shrigley exhibition and the one at the Hayward Gallery is set to be a major one. Combining two decades worth of work, including many new pieces, the show is certain to be a hit with his multitude of fans. Entitled David Shrigley: Brain Activity, the exhibition invites you to step into the surreal, multi-faceted world of the artist, who comments on life, death, lost pigeons and the absurdity of existance.
Cartoons and photos
Best known for his line drawings and cartoons, David Shrigley has produced more than 7,000 works on paper since leaving the Glasgow School of Art in 1991. Providing the Hayward Gallery with a mere 80 for the exhibition, he is also showcasing around 45 new paintings, which are larger in scale. Sitting alongside the works on paper are a well known series of photos, which depict the artist's interventions in the real world, by advertising a river for sale, or posting a Lost poster for a non-descript pigeon on a tree.
Sculptures and installations
Larger scale work on show in the David Shrigley exhibition includes a set of bronze weapons, a pile of colourful plasticine creatures entitled The Contents of the Gap Between the Refrigertor and the Cooker, and Gravestone, which is a headstone carved with a mundane shopping list, reminding the owner to purchase items such as aspirin and biscuits. The Hayward show also includes a specially commissioned steel gate which integrates itself with the gallery's architecture, a series of egg shaped sculptures labelled with the word Egg, and several taxidermied headless animals.
The Letter
Certain to be one of the most fascinating examples of his work, and coinciding neatly with the annual Imagine Festival for children, is the animation The Letter. Shown against the Royal Festival Hall exterior every of the David Shrigely exhibition, London art fans will be able to see an anonymous letter writer scribing a missive to Mrs Teacher, explaining their abscence. This and several other works included in the exhibitition have never before been seen in the UK.
Exhibition highlights
Two of the most comical sculptures included in the show are certain to be some of the most popular with fans of David Shrigley, who has a reputation for seeing the comical and surreal side of dark things. A stuffed dog, holding up a sign that reads I'm Dead, and a work entitled Pumpkin, which features a small pumpkin that has had the limbs and head of a Barbie doll attached in the appropriate places are certain to raise a few wry smiles from those with a darker sense of humour. Alongside the exhibition, there's also a 'sort of opera', Pass The Spoon, which features a surreal libretto from Shrigley.
