Creating art with computers has been around for a long time, but how far have we come from the early days of graphic and digital design? Decode: Digital Design Sensations at Victoria and Albert Museum brings together a group of international artists and designers to explore the world of technological art.

Digital design sensations
Decode: Digital Design Sensations takes an unusual theme for the Victoria and Albert Museum, that of the latest technology and scientific developments in digital and interactive design. With plants that grow through digital input and a mechanical eye that blinks back at you, this exhibition takes you from the small screen to full size interactive installations.

Code, interactivity and networks
Three themes take you through the Decode: Digital Design Sensations exhibtion, exploring the different ways in which you can create technologically inspired art. Code as Raw Material looks at the ways in which code can be used as a raw material, like clay by a sculptor to create fluid or shifting objects. Interactivity reflects on the ways in which the viewer can influence the art, while The Network focuses on all the different ways we have of communicating with each other, such as phones, GPS tracking systems, blogs and online digital traces.

Unusual artforms
The result of all the complicated computer wizardry is the stunning collection of art on display in the exhibition. Even if you consider yourself to be a bit of technophobe, there is plenty at Decode: Digital Design Sensations to admire. Artist Daniel Brown has created organic depictions of imaginary plants inspired by the V&A collections, that constantly grow new buds or burst into flower; Weave Mirror by Daniel Rozin recreates images of the viewer on 768 motorized planes; and Jonathan Harris and Sep Kamvar have created a selection of colourful floating spheres that represent the feelings of thousands of different bloggers around the world.

Decode: Digital Design Sensations takes place from 10am - 5.45pm, 10am - 10pm on Fridays, from Tuesday 8th December 2009 - Sunday 11th April 2010.
