Degas Dancers at Royal Academy is an exhibition that looks closely at the Impressionist's obsession with dance and movement of the human form, and compares it to the advances of photography at the time. Capturing the fluid movement of the dancer on canvas or on film, the exhibition charts Edgar Degas's involvement with both the world of dance and the technological areas of film and photography.

Degas Dancers at Royal Academy
Taking the viewer from the early days of his ballet paintings in the 1870s up to the final years of his career, the Degas exhibition traces the artist's development of style from the documentation of dancers' movements in basic sketches and portraits, to his more expressive and sensuous paintings. Capturing the grace, elegance and physical skill involved in each dancer's pose, the paintings highlight his progressive engagement with the figure of movement.

Advancing technology
As Degas's career as a painter and artist developed, so did the nature of advancing technology in the world of film and photography. Included in the exhibition Degas Dancers at Royal Academy are several pieces of contemporary film, and photographs taken by the artist, which demonstrate the influence of this brand new medium on his painting style. By contrasting these pieces directly with Degas's paintings, visitors to the show are able to see just how profound an effect the development of the new visual medium had at the time.

Exhibition highlights
Bringing together works from both public and private collections, the exhibition also gives you the chance to see some of the most famous and celebrated works by Degas up close. Several little known pieces are also included alongside the more recognisable works in Degas Dancers at Royal Academy, meaning fans of his work may well see some of his paintings in the flesh for the very first time. Mixing drawings, pastels, paintings, prints and sculpture with both film and photography, the show combines the artistic, the expressive and the technological to explore the nature of movement within dance.

The Degas Dancers at Royal Academy exhibition takes place from 10am - 6pm, Saturday 17th September - Sunday 11th December 2011.
