Celebrating the monumental works of a largely forgotten French master, the Delaroche exhibition London event aims to bring the beautiful historical paintings of Paul Delaroche back into the public light. Now hardly known in the UK, Delaroche was famous in his day for painting large and sensational historical scenes, most notably The Execution of Lady Jane Grey.

Delaroche exhibition London
Titled Painting History: Delaroche and Lady Jane Grey, the Delaroche exhibition London event uses as its centrepoint the 1833 painting titled The Execution of Lady Jane Grey, pictured, which is from the National Gallery's own collection. The huge painting caused a massive stir when it was first shown in the Paris Salon in 1834 because of its dramatic realism and tragic subject matter.

Painting History: Delaroche and Lady Jane Grey
Delaroche's portrayal of the execution of the teenage Lady Jane Grey, who was Queen of England for just nine days before her death in 1554, is in many ways typical of the artist's style and subject matter. Delaroche specialised in producing large historical tableaux, often from dramatic moments in English history, and often touching on the themes of execution, imprisonment, and martyrdom.

Celebrated French artist
Although Delaroche achieved international acclaim for his work during his lifetime in the nineteenth century, he is now hardly known in the UK. The Delaroche exhibition London event at the National Gallery aims to restore the French artist's reputation and bring his work to a wider audience.

Major retrospective
Collecting together the work of Paul Delaroche for the first time for a major retrospective examining his career, the Painting History exhibition at the National Gallery will display many of the paintings that built Delaroche's reputation, such as the 1851 work, Marie Antoinette before the Tribunal. The exhibition will also display much of the preparatory work and sketches for The Execution of Lady Jane Grey, which reveals Delaroche's sense of theatricality.

The Delaroche exhibition London event at the National Gallery runs from Wednesday 24th February - Sunday 23rd May 2010. Tickets are £8.00 or £7.00 for concessions. Children under 12 are free.
