Back for another year the Designers in Residence at Design Museum invites you to see what's new and exciting in the world of design, as four young designers spend six months developing their latest projects.
Designers in Residence at Design Museum
Taking up residency at the Design Museum for the latter half of 2012, this is a chance for emerging new talent to build on their current design practice, develop existing work and gain invaluable support from the staff at the museum. Selected from an open competition, the finalists are showcasing their work at the Design Museum from 29th August, on the subject of thrift.
Thrift
Taking inspiration from designers who used reclaimed or recycled materials could be a good bet for all the Designers in Residence at Design Museum this year as they take up the theme of thriftyness. With various different factors affected by economy, they face the challenges of resourcefulness, inspiration and intelligent use of material to get the most for their money. Covering products, furniture, graphics, spatial and interactive designs, the designers are set to explore the nature of thrift throughout their residence at the museum in 2012.
Creative thinking
Last year's four Designers in Residence at Design Museum came from a variety of backgrounds and worked in different materials. Simon Hassan continued his exploration of leather objects, questioning the perception it has as a luxury object; Hye-Yeon Park's residency saw her developing her RCA project Mr Clock, which features a dynamic interactive clock face; Will Shannon's all encompassing designer, maker and manufacturer role saw him develop a travelling production line which creates new products from unwanted furniture; and lastly Jade Folawiyo celebrated and explored the tarnishing and rusting of metals, being inspired by her Nigerian heritage. Click back soon for more information on the designers taking up residence at the museum this year.
Talks and events
Not only is the work of the designers on show throughout their residence at the Design Museum, but they are also set to become involved with the museum's programmes of events and talks. During their time in the museum, the designers in residence will also help to curate the late night openings where visitors can take part in workshops, hear from celebrated designers and get up close and personal with the latest exhibitions.
