Devotion by Design at National Gallery takes a closer look at devotional altarpieces from Italy before 1500. Bringing together a substantial amount of pieces from the late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance from the National Gallery's own collection, this exhibition investigates their development and their eventual decline as reglious artworks.

Devotion by Design at National Gallery
Exploring the function and original settings of these sacred artworks, the exhibition looks at how the altarpieces were created for specific contexts. Shown in the setting of the gallery rather than in a church as they would have originally been intended, the pieces can be examined chronologically for their formal and stylistic development.

Fragments of history
Alongside the whole altarpieces on show in Devotion by Design at National Gallery, the exhibition also shows fragments of altarpieces, and explains the role of the different elements of the focus for religious worship. The history of the church is also examined as the exhibition examines the reasons many altarpieces were dismembered, often being related to the dissolution of religious institutions.

Piero della Francesca
Looking at the evolution of the works and their relationship to the religious iconography surrounding them, the exhibition also invites visitors to take a look at the lesser known artists from both periods. Although there are many well known artist's altarpieces included in Devotion by Design at National Gallery such as Piero della Francesca, its also presents less familiar work in a fresh and innovative light.

Devotion by Design at National Gallery takes place from 10am - 6pm Wednesday 6th July - Sunday 2nd October 2011. Entrance is free.
