A Dickens exhibition at Museum of London celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of novelist in 2012, bringing together a selection of original manuscripts, paintings and photographs that tell the story of Dickens the man and the writer.
Dickens exhibition at Museum of London
From his poverty stricken childhood to his amazing career as one of the world's best known 19th century novelists, the Museum of London exhibition examines the life and work of Charles John Huffam Dickens through his literary works, his journalistic publications and his dedication to the great social issues of the time.
Dickens and London
Focusing on the author's relationship with the city as he knew it, the exhibition invites visitors to experience the realities of Victorian London for both the rich and the poor. Taking you on a journey through Dickens life, from his childhood spent working in a blacking factory to his journalistic endeavours in magazines, and finally as a published novelist, you can see what inspired him and why.
Creative genius
One of the highlights of the Dickens exhibition at Museum of London will no doubt be the rarely seen manuscripts of two of his best known works - Bleak House and David Copperfield. Alongside paintings, photos, costumes and objects, you can see the original works written in Dickens' own handwriting and an innovative audio visual representation of his desk and chair, as you learn about his passionate desire to help those less fortunate than himself.
Literary themes
Renowned for his need to address the social issues of the day through his writing, one of the most fascinating parts of the Museum of London exhibition is sure to be the William Raban film that invites visitors to compare contemporary night-time London with that described by Dickens during the 1850s onwards. Bringing to light the issues debated by many moralists and writers, the questions of wealth, poverty, childhood mortality and prostitution are all key issues which Dickens sort to bring attention to with his writing.
The Dickens exhibition at Museum of London, Dickens and London, takes place from Friday 9th December 2011 - Tuesday 12th June 2012. If you would like to book tickets for this event, click on the Buy Tickets button for more information.
